02/10/09 - Intrathecal Chemo #5

This is my first Intrathecal Chemotherapy that was a month from my previous one. Up until then, the treatments were done every two weeks, right now, my next five are scheduled to be once per month, for a planned total of 10 treatments. Did someone say broken record about my chemo scheduling? Well, this is to benefit any new readers, or those that may have forgotten. If you want to catch up on more facts, just read earlier postings - if you want to know more details, you won't be disappointed...

Intrathecal Chemotherapy Treatment #5

My CSF withdrawn during Intrathecal Chemo #4 was checked for cancerous cells, and none were found again. I'm hoping my results will be that positive for six more treatments... For some levity, The picture below was sent to me by my friend Deane this (2/10) morning.

My blood counts were also checked today. My WBCs (for fending off infections and sickness), Neutrophils (like WBCs), and hemoglobin counts (oxygen delivery, energy, cell development (cell development-I kind off made that up/I mean didn't confirm it) were all down. And my platelets (clotting) were slightly up. My platelets have been the slowest count to recover. They're all under the normal low value, as can be seen on my extreme right-hand side of my blood count plot.

Once again, I hope to post within the next month, unlike the last one... For one thing, I want to put a link up to a glossary of medical terms when I get a chance. In the meantime, I've found Wikipedia to be a good reference for other subjects.

Hi Mark, I just read your posts from the last 6 months or so with great interest. Thanks for the great source of info on the Ommaya Reservoir and all things intrathecal! I have been keeping up a blog for my mom at wordpress -- bloggingaboutshauna.wordpress.com -- detailing her fight with advanced breast cancer that metastasized to the spine 3.5 years ago and has now spread to the CNS. I'm glad to see that you have been handling the depocyt so well. She is scheduled for pre-op testing tomorrow morning and hopefully the surgery to insert the Ommaya Res will be on Friday. We're anxious to get it installed as we have been on hold for several weeks, no IV chemo or Avastin treatments. Anyway, feel free to check out my cancer vocab page if you would like and take any descriptions you need. Best wishes to you.

Andrea,

Thanks for leaving a comment. Intrathecal Chemotherapy will likely be easy for her to handle vs. the traditional style. Sorry it took me so long to respond...
